RealClear Defense presents Hot Wash

Hamas, Israel, Iran and the Human Tragedy in Gaza

Episode Summary

In this episode of the RealClearDefense podcast "Hot Wash", host John Sorensen and RCD Editor David Craig speak with Jonathan Schanzer, Senior Vice President for Research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and most recently author of “Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War”. In May of 2021, after increasing tensions surrounding the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, fighting broke out between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza strip. Hamas launched more than 4,360 rockets and mortars toward Israel killing 12 and injuring more than a 100. Israeli air strikes inside the cramped quarters of Gaza resulted in the deaths of more than 200, including at least 129 civilians, and nearly 2000 injured, according to the United Nations. Schanzer looks at how the media covered the events in May and puts the conflict in a historical and broader regional perspective. How do we talk about a conflict where every aspect is so politicized? How does Iran's support for Hamas shape the conflict, and what does Hamas’ strategy in Gaza mean for the region?
