RealClear Defense presents Hot Wash

John Walker Lindh

Episode Summary

In this episode of the RealClearDefense podcast "Hot Wash", host John Sorensen and RCD Editor David Craig speak with filmmaker Greg Barker, director of the new documentary “Detainee 001”, about John Walker Lindh, the American who joined the Taliban in the lead-up to the 9/11 attacks. Captured by the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan, Lindh was present when a prisoner uprising led to a fierce battle and the death of the first American killed in combat in Afghanistan, a CIA officer named Johnny “Mike” Spann. We are also joined by retired Marine Lt. Col Mick Wagoner who served under Gen Mattis as a military lawyer at Camp Rhino in Afghanistan, and supervised Lindh’s initial transfer out of Afghanistan. Lindh’s connection to the Taliban, Al Qaeda, as well as his role in Spann’s death transformed him into a political lightning rod at the beginning of the American war in Afghanistan and continues to divide observers to this day. "Detainee 001" is available now on Showtime, check the Show Notes for a link.
